Germany’s transition to wind energy encounters turbulence.

[Update, good news from Sandia]  In “Eco-Blowback: Mutiny in the Land of Wind Turbines”, Matthias Schultz of Der Speigel reports:

Germany plans to build 60,000 new wind turbines—in forests, in the foothills of the Alps and even in protected environmental areas. But local residents are up in arms, costs are skyrocketing and Germany’s determination to phase out nuclear power is in danger.

Why, “Germany’s determination to phase out nuclear power is in danger?”  Why not, “The haste of Germany’s decision to phase out nuclear power is reconsidered?”  Why is it either/or?  Why not both.  Why not unite and conquer fossil fuelBut I digress.

Wind energy, at first celebrated, is now bringing out the ire of locals.

Some are angry at the way the landscape, celebrated by German Romantic poets such as Hölderlin and Mörike, is being butchered. The opponents protest with images of the Grim Reaper holding a wind turbine rather than his traditional scythe.

Allegedly.  I wasn’t able to find a picture of a wind reaper.  Send us a link if you have one.  Here is a site which carries the reaper imagery and is against “Big Wind”.

Takeaway for Fusion

NIMBY is a powerful force to be reckoned with.  The more visible and audible your intrusion, the more resistance you will find.  Energy supply needs to be discreet, unobtrusive, non-threatening.  What are fusion’s most unobtrusive options?  ITER is an experimental device, a tad on the obtrusive side.  What can be done about that?  Can we disguise the whole thing as a mountain?  With a windmill on top?  The opposite of mountaintop removal.

Good news, Windsters!
