What do you think about this? Let us know in the comments below!

Do you get what the Fusion Energy League is about?  Do you agree with the mission?  Are you prepared to state the case for it and pull together the resources needed to support it?  Then you could be a board member!

Board members are not hypothetical constructs.  “They’re actual people who, in conjunction with you and other actual people you will recruit, will perform actual tasks in support of your actual institution.”

Raising money is nothing more than stating the case for an institution you love to people with the resources to support it. Board recruitment is nothing more than stating the case for an institution you love to people who will be prepared to do the same thing. Let’s stop complicating it, and preparing for it, and just get out there and do it.

Business Information

The Fusion Energy League is incorporated as a Non Profit in the State of New Jersey. Filing date March 8, effective date, March 20, 2012.  We are in the process of filing for our 501(c)3 status.  More Business Info »

Finding the Core

At present, our board has the minimum three (3) members required per the Bylaws (pdf) and State law.  We are looking for 8 solid members.  We get this number from an excellent article by Robert Paterson on Crowdfunding.

It’s ALL about the inner network - People like Raymond have a small group of people who are close to him who love him and in turn have their own network. Think of petals on a flower. Their networks branch out - they touch each other but are largely different. The key is to know these people and to work with them well before you launch. Bring them into the planning. THEY do most of the lifting. And it they who you have to pay a lot of attention.

Diversity Welcome!

We seek a variety of candidates representing a variety of skills. The Fusion Energy League is dedicated to the idea that everyone has a role to play in the advancement of fusion energy. As such, we are looking for a board that reflects a diverse cross section of people.  Physicists are but one band in the rainbow of the Fusion Energy League.

What Does Board Service Involve?

Here’s the fine print about boards to help you make an informed decision.  From Michael Davidson’s “Board Tool Kit”

Ten Basic Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards*

  1. Determine the Organization’s Mission and Purpose – It is the board’s responsibility to create and review a statement of mission and purpose that articulates the organization’s goals, means and primary constituents served.
  2. Select the Chief Executive – Boards must reach consensus on the chief executive’s responsibilities and undertake a careful search to find the most qualified individual for the position.
  3. Provide Proper Financial Oversight – The board must assist in developing the annual budget and ensuring that proper financial controls are in place.
  4. Ensure Adequate Resources – One of the board’s foremost responsibilities is to provide adequate resources for the organization to fulfill its mission.
  5. Ensure Legal and Ethical Integrity and Maintain Accountability – The board is ultimately responsible for ensuring adherence to legal standards and ethical norms.
  6. Ensure Effective Organizational Planning – Boards must actively participate in an overall planning process and assist in implementing and monitoring the goals of the organization.
  7. Recruit and Orient New Board Members and Assess Board Performance – All boards have a responsibility to articulate prerequisites for candidates, orient new members, and periodically and comprehensively evaluate its own performance.
  8. Enhance the Organization’s Public Standing – The board should clearly articulate the organization’s mission, accomplishments, and goals to the public and garner support from the community.
  9. Determine, Monitor, and Strengthen the Organization’s Programs and Services – The board’s responsibility is to determine which programs are consistent with the organization’s mission and to monitor their effectiveness.
  10. Support the Chief Executive and Assess His or Her Performance - The board should ensure that the chief executive has the moral and professional support he or she needs to further the goals of the organization.

Epic Responsibility

Board members are the people who are legally and fiscally responsible for the company.  Board service in a nonprofit is different than in a for profit.  Instead of divvying up the profits of the company (there aren’t any), Board members give their advice, support, money and enthusiasm without pay.

Why would someone sign up for that?  What’s your reason?

Some we’ve heard: To make a difference, and meet other difference makers.  More reasons
why you should join a nonprofit board.”
